Why hire an attorney?
With the rise of companies such as LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer, attorneys need to address the elephant in the room. Why should clients choose a flesh-and-blood attorney when the automated version is so much cheaper? My best answer is that my life doesn’t fit into a rigid formula or a series of drop-down selection boxes, and I’m sure that yours doesn’t, either. Human interaction is what allows lawyers to assess what a client’s real priorities are. “Fill in the blank” forms don’t take into account that you may need to qualify for Medicaid in a few years, or that your main concern is taking care of your daughter with special needs.
An estate plan, when crafted properly, takes into account all aspects of your life. Your tax situation, property ownership, business ownership, and family relationships all interact with this kind of plan. The truth is that automated guides and do-it-yourself forms fail to ask essential follow-up questions, and their shortcomings usually come to light only when it’s too late to change them. Face to face conversations with a lawyer can create lasting, durable solutions that require little to no maintenance.
